However, several albums have broken into the charts and received widespread fame and recognition.
For example, Green Day's album Dookie sold over 15 million copies worldwide and propelled the band to a much larger audience.
This shows that although pop punk is a niche genre, it can still be appreciated by mainstream listeners. This was also proven when Blink 182's album Enema of the State was released and also sold over 15 million copies worldwide - and was the main reason for Blink 182's success and mainstream recognition.
Their next album was not nearly as successful however. Even so, it still sold over 2 million copies. I think this is because the band were trying new things and mainstream listeners do (or did) not like change.
However, proof that niche genres have a more dedicated fan base was shown when Blink, after six years of being on a musical hiatus, released their first single from their new album, "Up All Night" and it received 2.3 million views on YouTube in less than a week - showing the fans' eagerness to watch their favorite artists. The new album debuted at number two on the top 200 billboard, and the tours held by Blink also sold 93% of available tickets online. This again shows the fans' loyalty and eagerness to see their favorite band live.
Overall, our genre, although niche, has a large dedicated fan base - and though many released albums fail to be noticed by the masses, they are still respectably sold worldwide and there is always a market for the artists to aim for because there are always teenagers eager to listen to rebellious music.
